PhotoRename – Windows Utility to Batch Rename Photos
Review by on
As I see it, if you have a bunch of photos and you want to rename them, you can do it in one of two ways. You can do it yourself – that would be the first way. You will have to go through each individual photo and manually renaming each photo. It will take some time to do this, but at least you will take pride in working hard and getting things done by yourself.

Or you could turn to software and let specialized applications lend you a helping hand. The software will do the renaming on your behalf, while you go have a sandwich or something. Once the software is done you will take pride in the fact that you were smart enough to know when you should do things yourself and when it’s better to use an application to help you out.

An application that can automatically rename your photos is the Jarle Aasland-developed and aptly named PhotoRename. This application automatically renames photos using EXIF metadata. If your digital camera saves photos as DSC_0001.jpg for example, PhotoRename will use EXIF metada to rename that photo into something like 2005_May_17 time_11-17 (1600x1200 pixels).jpg or Trip to Venice June_21_2005 @ 10-58-11.jpg

Before you go get PhotoRename and put it to the test, take a look at the technical details presented below:
Download – the download weighs in at 924KB, which is quite lightweight. A less than 1MB download will complete in no time at all, even if you are on a less than spectacular internet connection.
Supported OS – according to the developer, at the time of writing this PhotoRename provides support for “any PC running Windows 2000, XP, or later.”
Limitations – you can use PhotoRename free of charge for a trial period of 30 days. Once that trial period is over, you will have to get a license to keep using the application.

Pros
  • Lightweight download
  • Easy to use
  • Rename files using EXIF data
  • Modify existing filenames
  • Integrates with Windows Explorer
  • Filename preview

Cons
  • Free to try (30-day trial)
